The Need For Thanksgiving
The Need For Thanksgiving
I really don’t want to be writing about Thanksgiving right now. I feel angry, i feel depressed, i feel a little hopeless in the moment.
All of these are flashing warning signs that my spirit is not right with God.
I’m a glass half full kinda guy so here’s the good news:
My current state isn’t who I am. If it was, I wouldn't feel so overwhelmed by it. It would feel natural.
Praise God it doesn’t.
We are the children of God so it makes sense that we are emotionally sensitive when things are out of balance. If identified properly (truly) these disruptive feelings can be of great service to us. Misattributed they leave us heartbroken at best.
Thanksgiving is a great practice because it often involves looking outward. It is a practice of conscious appreciation of worthiness. Keith Green has this awesome song called “Make My Life a Prayer to You”. In it he has a verse that says “it's so hard to see when my eyes are on me.” A huge evolution in the Christian walk is realizing that you are not your own. Your purpose is not to make yourself comfortable by pursuing what you think is best. When we understand that righteousness is a learned trait our need for a savior becomes increasingly obvious. It's a top down flow. It only comes from Him. Though our spirits do long for truth the answers are not found within.
By recognizing God’s righteousness and faithfulness we regain a steady spiritual heartbeat.
